PSU Regulations and Guidelines on Health Insurance for International Students 2022

Types of Insurance

1. Basic University Health and Accident Insurance

International students are required to have health and accident insurance from their own countries. However, once a student pays the tuition fee during registration, he/she obtains a standard University Health and Accident Insurance, effective for the period of time that one is registered.

For international students who are interested in private health insurance, students can check their insurance coverage and plans according to the following information.

One of the purposes of having dormitories in the campus is to improve learning environment, to let students have better opportunities to exchange their attitudes and view points, to foster good relationship and friendship, to develop students’ characters on many aspects such as how to live together in orderly manner as well as to learn to be responsible to ourselves and to the public in general.

Eligibility and Priority for the Residency of Student Dormitories: Every student who resides in the university dormitory must transfer their house registration to their current place of resident in the dormitory, except those student whose house registration is in Songkla Province. They may change their house registration after graduation or after they are no longer a resident in the university dormitories. The rules and regulations employed in selecting students who are eligible to stay in the university dormitories are as follows:

1. The university will offer a place of residence in university dormitories for every first year student and for every 2nd- 4th year students of the Faculty of Nursing.
2. The university will allot a place in university dormitories for each student who has health problem and/or chronic or congenital conditions which has been certified by doctors that daily travel from home to study at the university will adversely affect the health of the students. There are quotas for dormitory student committees, administrative members of the student council, members of the student administrative board, presidents, treasuries and secretaries of associations and clubs affiliated with the student organizations, not more than 25 members of the committee of student association of each faculty; and outstanding athletes and performers who bring recognition to the university as well as other students deem proper by the university. The available vacancies will be given to other students who request residency in the dormitories, by balloting.
3. The 3rd – 4th years nursing students will be able to stay in the dormitory of the Faculty of Nursing.
4. The 2nd – 6th years medical students will be able to stay in the dormitory of the Faculty of Medicine.

Dormitory Room Rate:

1. For dormitories 1 and 7 (4 students/room), the rate is 1,800 Baht/person/semester.
2. For dormitories 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 15 (3 students/room), the rate is 2,200 Baht/person/semester.
3. For dormitories 8-14 (2 students/room), the rate is 3,600 Baht/person/semester.
4. For dormitories 8, 9, 14 (for graduate students only), the rate is 800 Baht/person/semester, plus electricity charges (as used).

Alternative Accommodation

Some foreigners may opt to lease housing in town. Most apartments in Hat Yai and the surrounding areas are similar to studio apartments - a single room with a restroom and balcony. Houses may also be rented, if you let your PSU contact know well in advance.

For most foreign staff or official guests hosted by the university, transportation is of no major concern. Depending upon the length of your stay, you may be given access to a vehicle with a driver or a motorcycle/bicycle owned by the faculty with which you are associated. Nonetheless, walking is also a pleasant proposition, since the campus is beautifully landscaped, and most locations can be reached on foot in about 20 minutes. Cycling is also a convenient mode of travel.

If you do have the opportunity to drive a motor vehicle, you should keep in mind that in Thailand one drive on the left side of the road. Also, you should be aware that driving behaviors of Thai motorists are somewhat less restrained than what you may be accustomed to, so remain alert at all times. A pedestrian’s right of way is not always acknowledged in Thailand, so caution is strongly advised when crossing a road.

Tuk-tuks and motorcycle taxis, alternative forms of Thai transportation, can be found near the Rong Chang (Elephant Canteen), by the PSU Hospital entrance, or outside the main campus entrance.

A free campus bus service operates daily from 07:30-09:30, 12:30-13:30 and 15:30-17:30 (see map for routes below). A new more frequent, electrically-operated, campus bus service has been launched in July 2010. Taxis, vans and buses are available for transportation to destinations outside Hat Yai. Every faculty and main offices of the university are linked on-line. The university has adopted modern information technology and utilized it for efficient administration, management and provision of the active academic environment for higher education. It is a must that all students have accessed to the internet from their faculties.

As the sources of information and knowledge for all, PSU is managing six main libraries: two in Hat Yai Campus and one in each of the other campuses. Each library provides full range of services to staff/ personnel/ students of the University, as well as to the general public. Moreover, most faculties also have their own specialized libraries. However, specific permission is usually required.

The Khunying Long Athakravisunthorn Learning Resources Center is the university’s central library in Hat Yai campus. A large collection of English language reading materials is available. The opening hours are as follows:

Being a research university, Prince of Songkla University has prepared full infrastructure for research works: a high-performance information technology network, an on-line library and an audio-visual system for learning, a modern center for scientific equipment servicing around the clock, specialized laboratories in numerous fields. Moreover, every faculty has its own specialized laboratories modern equipped and open to all staff and students.

The Scientific Equipment Center is the center for modern scientific equipment for testing, use and maintenance of laboratory equipment in compliance to the university and industrial sector’s needs. Outstanding services include a calibration laboratory for micropipettes and an Internet-controlled hi-tech oven. The Center also provides analyzing and testing services concerning Halal food standards and testing of bio-diesel quality.

The Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Natural History Museum’s prime role is to conduct researches, to educate and promote interest in knowledge about the development of the universe, earth, flora and fauna, together with their biology and ecology. Researches on biodiversity of Peninsular Thailand are actively carried out in collaboration with researchers from all over the world. The Museum houses collections of hundreds of thousands specimens and is considered to be among the largest museum of this kind in Thailand that curates almost everything from mammals to pollens, plus rocks and minerals. Certain sub-collections are unique, like the butterfly and aquatic fauna collections. Also, the Bat specimen collection is considered to be the largest in the country and the PSU Herbarium is one of the three herbariums in Thailand registered internationally.

Apart from basic scientific equipment for research at different departments, the Scientific Equipment Center provides high profile and sophisticated equipment services to graduate students and faculty members to support in-depth research, i.e. scanning electron microscope, electron probe microanalyzer, transform nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, DNA sequencer, image analyzer, microplate reader, ect.

Food is an integral part of all cultures, but in Thailand this seems to be even more apparent. Thai cuisine has quickly become internationally famous for its fascinating combination of ingredients and its tasty and unique flavors. Food in Thailand is delicious, inexpensive, and available almost everywhere. Like the diets of most Asian people, the Thai diet is centered on rice. Rice is available in many different varieties and is commonly consumed at every meal: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

New to some will be the spiciness of the Thai food. While it is wonderfully tasty, it is often very hot. Chili peppers are used abundantly and may not always be apparent until a burning sensation overcomes you. Eating some plain rice will help to douse the fire more quickly than drinking water. When ordering, feel free to ask whether the food is spicy hot (phet mai?), or ask for it to be made not spicy (mai phet). Just remember that the Thai perception of spicy may be quite different from yours. In addition to a liberal use of chillies, southern Thai cuisine also uses turmeric, a yellow ginger-like root, for making curries. Additionally, there is a strong Muslim influence on local cooking, like for example roti and chicken with saffron rice.

Several food centers are present in the campus. The two larger ones are the Hospital Cafeteria, located in the basement of the Songklanagarind Hospital, and the Rong Chang (Elephant Canteen). The Hospital Cafeteria is open from early morning until late afternoon, and the Elephant Canteen is open from early morning to about nine in the evening. Besides, most faculties have their own food centers. Sritrang Food Center is situated off campus near the University Gate 109, on the south side of the campus. A variety of Thai, Chinese, and Muslim food is normally available in all these centers.

The Good View Restaurant (Staff Club), opposite the university reservoir, is the only place on campus where alcoholic beverages are served. It is a relaxing and pleasant place with a beautiful view. It is open from 11:00 a.m. to 22:00 p.m. daily.

A Green Market is also available in the evenings of Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It is located near the Gate 109. One can buy fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh fish and seafood, and a vast diversity of ready-to-eat food.

There are several convenience stores on campus, including four 7-Eleven stores (opened at all hours): one near Rong Chang cafeteria, one at the basement of Songklanagarind hospital, one at the medical village, and another at student’s dormitory no. 9. There are also two bookstores on campus: one near Rong Chang and another near the Green Market not far from the Gate 109. Both carry more Thai than English language publications, but one can order the latter from both bookstores.

The university’s Post Office, at the basement of the President’s Office Building, is open from 08:30 to 16:30 on weekdays and from 09:00 to 12:00 on Saturday.
Postal Services:

Collecting and delivering mail is provided for students. A student’s name, surname and dormitory number should be specified on the mail. Normal mail will be delivered to a student’s room in the dorm. Notes will be sent to students if they have registered mail. Students need to present their ID and the notification regarding registered mail in order to collect it at the Office of Student Dormitories.

The Siam Commercial Bank (SCB, tel:0 7428 2970), next to the President’s Office Building, offers a full range of services, and is open from 08:30 to 15:30 on weekdays.There is also a minor branch of the Bangkok Bank at the Songklanagarind Hospital. ATMs are available at quite a few places on campus.

The Hat Yai Campus Hospital Songklanagarind Hospital, located near the main entrance of PSU, is open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday and 8:30 am to noon on Saturday. After hours emergency treatment can be obtained at the hospital Emergency Room. You can be quite confident that the treatment provided by the hospital satisfies the highest health care standards at reasonable prices, as our hospital is one of the best public hospitals in southern Thailand. We advise every international student to buy health insurance through the university for his or her convenience in using the medical services.

PSU has a mandate to enables foreign employees (under the age of 60) to obtain free medical and dental treatments. However, a premium of 5% will be deducted from their salary.

International students are required to have health and accident insurance from their own countries. However, during registration, one can opt to obtain a university health and accident insurance for 300 Baht a year. Health insurance coverage includes free treatment (not exceeding 10,000 Baht per year) at Songklanagarind Hospital. This will only be effective for the period of time that one is registered. Accident insurance coverage includes free treatment at any public hospital, but is limited to a maximum of 12,000 Baht for each accident. At the Songklanagarind Hospital, students are not required to pay in advance, but in any other hospital they must pay the fees and submit claims to the university to obtain reimbursement.

The public Dental Clinic associated with the PSU Faculty of Dentistry is located next to the hospital, and is open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.

At PSU, one can enjoy outstanding sports provisions: sport courts (tennis, basketball, badminton, volleyball, takraw, petanque), multi-purpose playing fields, swimming pool (Hat Yai and Pattani only), fully-equipped gymnasiums, fitness center, areas for aerobics and Tai Chi classes.
Yoga classes and other types of sporting are available in several buildings around campus.

Detailed information about most of the recreational facilities and costs can be obtained from an officer at the gymnasium between 08:30 to 16:30.

The 60th Anniversary of His Majesty the King’s Accession to the Throne International Convention Center
The state-of-the-art PSU International Convention Center (PSUICC) is Thailand's newest international convention center and the largest in the country's southern region. The Center features splendid contemporary southern-style architecture, can accommodate up to 4,000 people and can be adapted to host everything from seminar and conferences to national and international trade fairs.

PSUICC is situated within Hat Yai campus, on Punnakan Road, at just ten kilometers from Hat Yai International Airport. You can make connections from almost anywhere to Hat Yai International Airport directly. You can get detailed information on flights to and from Hat Yai through any Thai Airways or Singapore Airline Office in your country, or through the internet. From the Hat Yai International Airport, you can travel to Pattani or other PSU campuses by minivans or air-con coaches through any of the many travel agents in and around Hat Yai.

It is special for PSU students because the last Wednesday of every month, the immigration service will provide services here. But if you can’t come during that day, there is other checkpoints of Immigration Bureau which is available in Hat Yai. (Please see banner “Visa Procedure”)
